These sizable hi-hats have quite an ominous look to them, but this 'dark' finish is simply one of the many different finishes Meinl has within its professional Byzance series. The large 15-inch B15DAH hi-hats feature this dark look, and as such, their untreated surface clearly shows the traces of them being hand-hammered into shape.

Both the size and finish of these hats impact the core sound, which is just about as dark as these cymbals look. And while the sound has plenty of body, thanks to the pair's generous diameter, it also decays quite rapidly and its pedal check is quite fast and not too cutting. When you open them up, these hats sound raw and crunchy, without ever being trashy. The Meinl Dark Hats have a distinct character that is serious and esoteric, but that still has plenty of presence.
